Frequently Asked Questions About General Ledger Accountant Job Description

What is the general ledger and why is it important?

The general ledger is a record of all accounts and their balances. It’s the foundation of all accounting and financial reporting. Every transaction must be recorded in the GL, and all financial statements are derived from GL balances.

What is double-entry bookkeeping?

Double-entry bookkeeping means every transaction is recorded twice—once as a debit and once as a credit. This system ensures the accounting equation (Assets = Liabilities + Equity) always remains in balance, which provides error detection.

What is an account reconciliation and how do you perform one?

An account reconciliation compares the GL balance to an independent source (like a bank statement) to ensure accuracy. To reconcile, you identify differences, investigate their causes, and make necessary adjustments or corrections.

What career opportunities are available for GL Accountants?

GL Accountants can advance to Senior Accountant, Financial Reporting Analyst, or specialize in areas like accounts payable, accounts receivable, or cost accounting. The skills developed in GL accounting provide foundation for all accounting specializations.
